West Meadow

NEW Accessible Bungalow near Saunton, North Devon -

"West Meadow" is a recently refurbished 2 bedroom bungalow located on a quiet road on the outskirts of Braunton village, close to Saunton Beach, in North Devon. The property sleeps 2 - 6 guests and has accessibility-friendly adaptions which accommodate both able-bodied and disabled guests.

The bungalow has an attractive wrap-around garden which is predominantly grass with paved paths for access into and around the property. There is also a composite decking area with outdoor bench seating which has space for a wheelchair.

The inside layout has been thoughtfully designed to provide spacious open-plan living; with the kitchen, living room, and dining area occupying a large communal space. The kitchen has a height adjustable sink, height adjustable hob, and a tuckaway oven. The kitchen is fully equipped with utensils, crockery and equipment for a home-from-home self catering stay. A full size tall standing fridge freezer gives you lots of space for storing food and drink.

The master double bedroom features a double bed that comprises two separate bed bases that can be operated independently via an electronic handset. The Tempur Original Elite mattresses provide the very best in quality and comfort. There is plenty of storage in the in-built shelving units. There is direct access to a pleasant patio area from the master bedroom, via a double glazed glass door. The door and window span most of the width of the wall, giving the room an enviable amount of natural light. Grey vertical blinds with a long tilt control wand make for easy control of light and privacy.

The master bedroom boasts a level access ensuite wetroom which is connected via an XY ceiling hoist. The hoist runs from the double bed to the shower and toilet, and then across to the sink. The wet room is equipped with grab rails on either side of the toilet, a shower chair, and a stool. The shower is height adjustable and has a handy detachable shower head.

In the twin bedroom, you'll find 2 electric beds, operated by electronic handsets. Again, there is plenty of storage in the recessed shelving unit. The window in the twin room looks out into the back garden and lets in lots of natural light.

The family bathroom has a wonderful walk-in bath, a toilet with a grab rail and toilet frame, and a sink.

In the living room, you'll find a comfortable corner sofa that is also a sofa bed that can sleep up to 2 guests. The smart TV is on an extendable reach arm that allows you to change the angle of the screen. There is also an electronic single riser chair, operated by an easy-to-use hand set. The living area is also home to a Bluetooth speaker and family games.

The large wrap around garden is a real asset to West Meadow, with lawned, paved and decking areas. An attractive magnolia tree sits in the central lawn. To the back of the property, there is a large circular picnic table with benches and a space for a wheelchair. The garden is fenced and fully enclosed for peace of mind with children and dogs. The decking has gently sloped ramp access and leads into the living room via a large sliding door. Outside, you'll also find a small shed that houses a washing machine and a tumble dryer.

Braunton Village centre is 1 mile away (21 minute walk/4 minute drive/12 minutes via bus) and boasts a great portfolio of pubs, cafes and independent shops. Saunton Sands Beach is 1.3 miles away (3 minute drive/15 minutes via bus). Saunton Sands Beach has an accessible concrete slipway which leads to the beach and newly installed plastic matting provides a further aid. All-terrain wheelchairs are available to hire from Saunton Sands Beach Shop (subject to availability and must be booked in advance). West Meadow Road is on a bus route that serves Barnstaple in one direction and Croyde in the other.

There is a dedicated parking space for the property outside of the garage which gives direct access to the main accessible entrance. The back entrance is via a gently sloped paved pathway that leads onto the decking and level access sliding door.

There is additional parking on the street to the front of the property (please do not park beyond the picket fence). Free parking at Saunton Beach Car Park for up to 3 cars for the duration of the holiday is included in the price.

The property is totally dog-friendly and welcomes assistance, therapy, and companion pets. There is no limit to the number of dogs guests can bring, nor restrictions on breed or size.

Saunton Beach is dog-friendly throughout the year. All-terrain wheelchairs are available to hire from Saunton Beach Shop (advanced booking required, subject to availability). The slipway has rubber matting installed at the end for ease of access on to the beach.

Reviews for West Meadow

Name: Phil
Date of Visit: 03/23

This is a lovely property, having good wheelchair access via the path and rear sliding door, or via the master bedroom outside door. This is a quiet housing estate on the west outskirts of the small town of Braunton, and the 21c bus passes the door regularly. Parking is easy, right outside the gate, or in front of the white garage door nearest to the house.

The traditional-looking bungalow on the outside, is a fully-modernised surprise on the inside, and a well-executed one at that.
Everything looked virtually brand new during our visit.

The rise-and-fall electric cooking hob and sink are ideal for the chair user, and the large fridge had good capacity for our chilled food. The open-plan kitchen and living and dining areas are well executed.

There are two good bedrooms, with soft mattresses, and for people needing a firm mattress, a very comfortable sofa-bed is provided in the living room area. This is not under the overhead hoist, which is located above the master bedroom bed. Users needing this bed are advised to bring a Mangar Camel for height-change too/from their wheelchair. The individual controls for the master bedroom bed, said to be profiling halves, were not tested this time.

The bathroom was almost over-populated with an adjustable bed table, a commode chair, a separate shower chair. I took my own commode, which has a soft seat. At the time of our visit they had a new, very firm commode, not shown in their photos. A shower and commode chair with tilt would have covered both these, I thought. But this is a minor point.

The Prism Medical TransActive Xtra overhead hoist (also brand new, apparently) gave a problem, but this was repaired in a single engineer visit that caused little disruption. Despite this, the Company offered £100 compensation, for our cooperation in achieving a swift outcome. This was accepted and received gratefully.

The hoist extends continuously into the bathroom, and the partner or carer could move the hoist from the X axis onto the Y axis via a traverse facility. If you intend to use this, you ought to ask for a demonstration on how to operate it, as it did seem to need a good tug (but I didn't need it)

Would we use the Property again? Yes definitely, it was a home from home! It should be possible for three couples to sleep, though we were a single couple. We were sorry to have to leave. That's the measure of this place.
This is a business of repute, and for good reason.
